what we're doing here

This blog is an attempt to publish a year-long correspondence on architecture, the city, and 'infrastructurism' -- a word i made up on a hazy New York morning after reading too much Rem Koolhaas. the basic proposition is that there is a tendency (not quite a movement, but more than an isolated set of incidents) in contemporary architecture to create innovative forms and structures by blurring or re-drawing the line between architecture and infrastructure. as the months have gone on, the appearances and manifestations of this tendency have become more and more frequent. until we get around to sorting through the early correspondence and posting its more significant moments, this blog may turn out to be mostly a disorganized list of 'infrastructurist' occurrences as we come across them. and, because discipline is alien to blogging, it will be about other topics as they come up as well. like Saint Louis. i'm sure there's a lot that's infrastructurist about Saint Louis, but i really haven't spent enough time there to tell you what. i've just driven through twice, really. but for some reason my head keeps coming back to it ...

On the topic of St. Louis, I recommend the appropriate chapter from William Everdell's _The First Moderns_. On the topic of the topic of this blog, I had originally (see my comment to inaugural post) promised to insert past bits of augen-pupil correspondence while (slowly but surely, as They say) re-formatting it for "public consumption." Fact is, folks, the correspondence is too large to be imported here with adequate legibility. But! I continue to work on making it something available online. Meanwhile, this blog: outward from the soon-to-be-revealed source. And stay tuned for my Beijing diary and pictures.

The sad irony is Yahoo just gave me 2 gigs of storage space ... if this had come 8 months ago i'd have the full correspondence on file, and not just half of it.
So, we post as we go. Btw, i've forgotten the 'infrastructor' login; i'm afraid he'll be a silent and brooding presence.

I may have infrastructor's login info kicking around somewhere. I'm sure I'll stumble across it at some point.
